Chapter 7

The Mall

I quickly pulled into a parking spot at the mall. I hadn’t finished work as early as I would have liked, and I only had about fifteen minutes before I needed to be at the day-care to pick up Samuel and Kimberly. I shuffled through the slushy parking lot towards the mall, carrying my oversized purse. If Mandy had shut up sooner, I wouldn’t be in such a rush.

As I passed the family parking spot, another young man emerged from an expensive sports car. Is there something I’m missing in the word ‘family’? The man removed his sunglasses and smiled at me; completely oblivious to the fact I wanted to sock him right in the face.

I made my way into the mall. It was even busier today, two days before Christmas. I fought through thick crowds of people towards the toy store where, hopefully, they had a Ferbie left in stock.

As I came closer to the center of the mall, the crowd seemed to become thicker and harder to shove my way through. I stood up on my tippy toes to see what all the commotion was. There was an enormous line of last minute shoppers waiting to have their kids sit on Santa’s lap. I wondered if it was Nicholas again.

I shoved my way through the crowd, making a small detour around the Winter Wonderland display to try and catch a glimpse. I pushed aside an entire Asian family with six or seven kids to get a spot at the edge of the fence into the play land. I was like a young teenager, trying to get a spot right against the stage at the rock concert so they could see their idol just a little bit closer.

It was in fact Nicholas. He held a small child on his lap and had the biggest smile across his face. I could see his thick arms fill out his red and white Santa suit. Oh, what I would give to be on that lap. He helped the child down off of his lap then turned to ask the elf to bring in the next child. Then, he looked towards me.

He recognized me immediately and smiled. I smiled back, shyly. I was a little embarrassed to have pushed my way through so many children to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus, but after that smile, it was all worth it.

He turned his head back to his work, as another child was lead up to his lap.

I was running out of time. I had to go get that damn Ferbie. I began once again to shove my way back through armies of people towards the toy store. The toy store was like the heart of the mall at Christmas time. There was a constant stream of people flowing in and out of it. I pushed my way into the stream and entered the toy store.

It was overwhelming. There must have been one hundred isles of useless crap. Half the parents in the store were pushing strollers or guiding small children around.
